[hey Clarke, maybe you shouldn't only go to Friday when you want to force her to answer questions that she doesn't want to answer!]

( how else do you find the hard answers without asking the hard questions??? )
There are only a few spaces we're not allowed into on this ship, though. Unless there's a hidden door at the back of the Tommy Bahama, I can't imagine we would have missed it.
It would have been cool. But don't stress yourself out about it, Sharky.
( quietly mouths to herself "billboard top 100", then just accepts it as an old world thing. a concept that goes down way easier than deep fried oreos. )
I look forward to hearing what you got. Anything would be an improvement from when the Captain used to just wail into the microphone.
no just a restaurant but like it could b a labrynth situatin like w david bowie
fuck u have NO IDEA who that is ugh this is ridiculous 👨🎤 thats based off him ANYWAY theres a labrynth rite duh but the girls walkin 4 miles n she doesnt find a single opening just like miles of 🧱🧱🧱🧱 rite so then she sees a catepillar and is like yo wats up w this maze its not rly good yk??? n 🐛 is like yo girl u just need 2 look harder

( does she... want to know... more about a skin tight leotard and glam rock makeup? survey says: ...nah, not really. )
Huh. Interesting?
And that's super sweet, Sharky but. Much like carnival rides, I wouldn't trust any secret passage ways around here to be safe. I wouldn't want you to get hurt too.
clarke im literally a 55 y/o man who survived a nuclear apocalypse + bunch of magic bullshit + possession i kno it probs doesnt look like it but i can take care of myself yk i got a shotgun n everything
Don't forget to add "can chug pure rubbing alcohol" to that list, too.
( this is a vote of confidence. not for the "hints of apple flavoring" in that jug from his birthday, though; those were nonexistent.
but it is a bit tepid. natsuno yuuki is a virtually unkillable vampire powerhouse who can regenerate and hypnotize people, and she'd still managed to almost get him killed on her last reckless venture. )
I know. I just
A shotgun probably wouldn't have stopped that Lord Vile fiasco. Why take chances?
[turnabout's fair play, girl!!! she is just as easily killed as he is, after all -- technically, she's even been killed more than him, but he feels like that'd be a dick move to bring up.]
yeah LET YOU!!! im gonna have a hand on the pa systme soon u kno ill put out n APB blond chick in need of a party to distract her from touchin the walls!!!
[he knows your type, Clarke. your grimdark energy is only somewhat hiding the deeply traumatized survivor mentality that comes with guilt and a lack of self-esteem masquerading as raw determination. it's sort of the same thing he picked up from the twins after the fact. the same thing he saw in Carmina right before she decided she needed to be the one to risk her life looking for help outside of the county.
damn. teenage girls really do be getting into moods, huh?]
wat about small kickbacks r those ok cos my bro klaus has some disney movies we were gonna watch sumtime i asked they said its cool if u join!!!
ok but also rmembr im gonna hve the pa system if u find somethin thats like threat lvl midnight u txt me i can let every1 kno news travels fast arnd here but not fast enuf if theres a fire or somthin
[like, he totally believes Friday would warn them if the ship were about to sink or something -- but she might not think that the eternally burning pit of hellfire is anything to write home about, you know??]
Movie viewings and invite-only birthday parties are fine. ( especially if the latter is at the expense of jade curtiss, or anyone else easily flustered with a mint toothpaste cupcake and being strong-armed into giving a speech.
and for that last part: )
I promise, Sharky. To alert you to any impending doom.
( i am doing the best that i can, clarke remembers all but screaming in an empty access tunnel. only to be met by octavia blake's sallow, put-upon face; a picturesque expression of disdain.
well that's not good enough.
and she winces. once in remembrance of an old friend, twice in a sort of belated recognition of old roles being filled by newer faces, and a third time at how deeply that note strikes home. because rita is right. on all counts. and clarke not only has no reason to rebuke, but no desire to. )
quietly, almost as if to herself: ) I know. I know. It isn't convenient...
( then face turned up again, more properly addressing rita. similar to feeling like she doesn't deserve to offer comfort to the likes of ava or darcy in the wake of the lord vile murders, it feels awkward to ask: ) How is he?
[There's an intake of breath, and then Rita bites her lip, quite literally biting back the urge to repeat then why. Clarke is clearly not going to give her a satisfactory answer.
It's as maddening as it is painful.]
How do you think? He's suffering! [She doesn't even word it that way to be vindictive. It's simply the exact description that keeps rolling around in her brain: Natsuno is suffering, and there's nothing she can do to stop it.]
He's in pain, and even if he says it'll get better, I- [She stops short there, but the unspoken worry--that maybe he won't recover, that maybe he could be in permanent pain--is probably clear enough to Clarke.]
( it doesn't have to be vindictive in nature to still sting like a slap across the face.
clarke hears the part of her mind that suggests just killing him. hoping he'd wake up whole and unbothered by the side effects of injecting the sun el. it would be one of the worst things she'd ever done — because, yeah, in her mind she'd caused this mess and would be the one to clean it up — but at least natsuno wouldn't be sickly and hurting the way he is right now.
she shakes her head, as if to clear it. banish the thought. they're supposedly past the point where she'd offered him death in the arcade as a means of escape. )
It'll get better. He'll get better. ( all ground out through tightly gritted teeth. he has to. then, she looks up. )
Yell at me all you need to, Rita. Get it out of your system, but know there's nothing you can say I'm not already thinking. It's my fault, and you should be at his bedside right now.
[Rita hasn't allowed herself to think of death as a potential solution, either. Because...death shouldn't be treated as a way to just get rid of a problem, and also...because deep down she's afraid he might not come back. Is it selfish, to potentially let him suffer longer because of that? She doesn't know--hasn't examined it any closer than dismissing the thought before it even fully comes to mind.]
Don't--don't you think I don't know that already?! [Because she's definitely not leaving him alone like that for long.]
Yelling at you isn't even doing any good!
[A point which she still yells because volume control is hard when she's upset, and she's still so frustrated that she won't get a satisfactory explanation for why it happened in the first place. So, after a moment, she half-turns to head back to 109.]
Fine, but--just don't think wallowing in regret is going to magically undo anything, either!
[Whenever Clarke arrives, she'll find Natsuno sitting on his bed, sorting through a box. Some items are laid out on the mattress: a pressed flower, red-and-black friendship bracelet, a bundle of withered white chrysanthemums and a photo of his parents.
He's wondering about certain things, and about people he lost.]
( it's not like he has to word it so politely, or even really ask. "come to 109" would have been sufficient, and "i need you" would have cut the two minute time span between that text ding and the arrival knock on his door in half. but anyways, she's here. stops in the middle of the room to take in the collage display of memorabilia laid out on the bedspread, then creeps closer to perch on the foot of the mattress.
the friendship bracelet she can pretty immediately place. mizuki had shoved a dozen of the same, rudimentarily braided cords in her hand once upon a time. they live in a desk drawer now.
the air already feels heavy around the conversation. )
[Clarke's friendship bracelet is also there, used to bookmark a copy of The Amulet of Samarkand on his nightstand. A plush toy suspiciously resembling Rita rests next to the book.
He hopes he never has to delegate them to the box, too.]
The meeting in Tayrey's cabin. Do you think there's a point to keep going?
clarke had been there for the entirety, but had remained a stationary object in the background, predominately just listening and jotting down coded notes. objectively, she'd mostly allowed her friends to flounder in the conversation. but between being called leadership material by valdis and ari trying to nudge her towards that role, it felt like it was for the best considering how most of her leadership ventures had played out. )
Keep going like keep trying to figure out how to kill the Captain? Absolutely.
Keep going like keep attending meetings where we just talk circles around each other? ...I don't know. I don't know if any of us know exactly what to do, despite all the information we have. That makes it hard to start planning anything concrete.
[Natsuno nods. The hypotheticals and talking circles frustrated him as well, and yet... he was hesitant to push forward by sharing what he does know.]
I feel the same way. Honestly, I still don't know if I can trust most of them. [He trusts Clarke to know it means not you, Rita and Palamedes.] You heard Tayrey - she'd bind him and leave us to clean up the mess. She still thinks she can go back. Her and Cassandra doubt half the information they do have.
[He frowns, gaze trailing over the memorabilia. He isn't used to second-guessing himself, always made a point of facing the consequences without regret, but now...]
I told Jade that whatever reasons he had to keep "Vile" a secret, they weren't good enough. That he's a hypocrite. And now I'm doing the same thing. How do you know if a secret is worse when you keep it, or when you tell?
( ah, so this is the heart of it. this is the conversation they're having. clarke mulls over his words for a few moments, then shifts. draws her legs up on the bed proper and sits criss cross applesauce, elbows on her knees and chin resting in her palms. she looks at the items he's strewn across the bedspread but doesn't quite focus on them.
it's nice natsuno feels he can still lean on her for hard decisions, even after the incident with the sun el. it's nice and it's heartening, and she wants to help. but the whole situation still sucks so much. )
That's a hard thing. And honestly a pretty thin line. Most of the time I'd say trust your gut, and you did that; that was good, and I'll follow your judgement. It's just... It's different. Vile was a ticking timebomb and Skulduggery hid it out of shame, genie is a weak spot and something the Captain hides out of fear.
What do you think is the worst that could happen if we told the whole ship what he is?
[Even after the sun el, he still values her experience and advice. Still values her vote of confidence on his decisions.]
The worst? [His reply is immediate, without hesitation.] He finds out we all know, decides it's not worth the risk and destroys everyone who isn't Skulduggery. Starts again with a fresh batch that has no clue.
[He's sure of that. Someone who escape his tormentors once will do anything to make sure he never goes back. Show your value to me, the captain said back at the trial. If he thinks they're more trouble than good - he'll throw them into the void.]
