Fair point. I'll try finding people who saw Highlander. Never thought I'd say this, but finding out the captain's taste in movies might actually be useful.

Battle Royale, Highlander... It's getting to the point we're going to have to read the entire library and find some sort of cinema snob if we want to catch all his references.

I've been reading nothing but horror and murder mysteries since I got here. So far none of it was useful.

But it could in the future. I wouldn't have expected the poems of a long dead Spanish author to be a reference I needed to know, but it came up.

And if that stupid camp was any metric, maybe we need to expand. And read... I don't know, trashy young adult fiction too.

He did tell me most pocket realities he creates are based on his favorite Earth media. I thought the camp was based on slasher movies. There are famous ones where a serial killer murders a bunch of teenagers in summer camp.

( does this feel like validation???? admittedly, a little bit. all the anxiety they'd held close to their chests, constantly waiting for camp aion to become camp bloodbath, and now a glimpse into earth media she'd missed out on during her formative years... )

Makes sense. Half of us were nervous, the other half oblivious. Maybe he wanted to see if anyone snaps. Apparently he doesn't collapse all the pocket realities once he's done with them, but we haven't been to those yet. I guessed that those had a better quality set so he didn't want to ruin them, and he said it's "close enough" but refused to say anything else.

Do you think any of us were close to snapping?

My read was most of us were thinking defensively, not offensively. Jinx seemed in a decent mood, I never saw Ebalon without Mizuki at his side, and I didn't even see Maximilien...

I think we need to focus on changing how we approach conversations with the Captain. Like Skulduggery said, direct, no commentary, press when he gets evasive. I want to test if he actually can't resist answering a question — and see what it takes to get him to answer one he doesn't feel like acknowledging at all. But the idea of other realities that he's kept for a long period of time, that he's perfected is...

alarming. And fascinating. The flora and fungi at the camp were lacking in specificity, I want to see what they look like in worlds he's kept around.

Same read as yours. Maximilien was standing in the forest without moving, pretending to be a statue or something. Jinx was in a decent mood, but she's unpredictable and can get violent without warning. I'd stay away from her.

There's a new guy who apparently talked to the captain about skateboards and teeth. He seems determined to play with him, so I suggested he talk to you. I assume he didn't follow up?

The challenge is how to get the captain to come out between excursions. He's very childish, so we need something he'll consider as a shiny new toy.

Skateboards and teeth? No, we spoke. ( kano had spoke, clarke had lost her cool and yelled at him. ) I actually met him on his first day on board; I told him about the bridge, but never expected he'd actually get an audience if he were to know... And now that I'm thinking about it, I didn't get name either.

But as for getting him to come out, somehow, for some reason, he's considered a part of Stede Bonnet's crew. ( ugh. ) He goes to their meetings. I have no idea what the hell Stede is doing about that, or why he's welcome, or why he bothers to play along with that entire charade but. That's an option.

The one who keeps putting up flyers? I never talked to him, but from reading these it seems like he's into playing pretend. [Pirate, matchmaker, therapist...] So small wonder the captain's into that. Sounds like a chance, though. If the captain plays along and there are people around, maybe it will be less of a risk.

[Not completely risk free, though. Never that. Honestly, just a chance to approach when he's already out is enough.]

I told him, I tried to tell him. Forcing friendships and romantic feelings that can just be turned around to hurt us later is probably the worst thing anyone could do here. And it's like he doesn't hear a thing I say. He told me I needed to relax and I just

I thought joining his stupid little group would have something, anything to do with waging a seafaring mutiny, but it's just been a waste of time. I'd quit, if it weren't for Darcy. And Diana. And all the people Bonnet might get hurt peddling his flawed ideals.

So far it seems like he plays along. I even tried to start a fight last time, and he more or less waved me off. So, yeah, that's a starting point.

Relax?. He really IS an idiot. Let me know when this group is meeting? I want to hear what the captain has to say.

Yeah, of course.

But brace yourself to be forced into some ridiculous talent show spectatorship, or expected to do an arts and craft activity.

They can expect all they want.

( it's a selfish sort of preemptive delight, but she wants to see stede bonnet try to persuade natsuno yuuki to relax and live a little. like how people stop and stare at a car crash, or find a weird sort of satisfaction watching others trip. maybe she's not so vindictive as to seek to see stede humbled by holding someone important to him while they bled out, but she's very much here for watching the showdown between one man's fantasy and the immovable stubbornness of too-serious teenagers. )

That's our plan then. Read books, figure out Highlander, talk to Skulduggery, and corner the Captain at the next pirate gathering and just... See what we can figure out.
